Classic Design Chairs
Charles and Ray Eames, the world's best-known mid century modern furniture designers, called the chair "the centerpiece of the house". Architects and Designers have always sought to create the ultimate design chair. Take for example the Verner Panton s-shaped chair dubbed the "Panton Chair" which stands out as one of the finest examples of Space Age design (the period between 1968-1972). This free flowing and gently curving sensually shaped chair has achieved absolute cult status and is rightfully so included in the collection of MoMA. With a shape that is as sexy as it is comfortable, the strikingly different Panton Chair has captured the hearts (and behinds) of many, including ours. Other equally iconic classic modern design chairs include the minimalist Bauhaus-styled Max Bill Ulm Stool (1954), the Sori Yanagi Butterfly Stool (1954), the Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair (1958) and Swan Chair (1958), the Pierre Paulin Ribbon Chair (1967), the Hans Wegner CH24 Wishbone Chair (1949), the Frank Gehry Wiggle Chair (1972) and Philippe Starck's legendary transparent masterpiece: Louis Ghost (2002). Other mid-century modern design chairs such as the Cherner Chair (1958) reflect Norman Cherner's remarkable affinity for beautiful streamlined modern design that is truly eternal. A recent introduction is a long lost design: a beloved modern design classic named "The Elephant Chair", a whimsical Eames chair shaped like a little elephant designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1945. Some new and notable new chair designs include Patricia Urquiola's Foliage Chair and Philippe Starck's Masters Chair, both for Kartell. New innovative designers such as Marcel Wanders and Maarten Baas have created some fabulous contemporary chairs for Moooi including the Carbon Chair and the Smoke Chair. If you are looking to complete your modern outdoor garden- or patio design, we can recommend the sculptural mid-century modern Loop Chair designed by Willy Guhl (1954) and the minimalist range of outdoor furniture by Gandiablasco.
Unique Accent Chairs
More than any other piece of modern furniture, the accent chair has been subjected to the wildest dreams of the designers. The particular curve of a backrest, or the twist of a leg, the angle of a seat or the color of the entire artifact all reflect the stylistic consciousness of each era and its designer. From Gerrit Rietveld and Alvar Aalto to Verner Panton to Eva Zeisel, from Art Nouveau to International Style, from Pop Art to Postmodernism, the phenomenon of the chair is so complex that it requires a reference work as comprehensive as this to do it full justice. They are all here: Thonet s bentwood chairs and Hoffmann s sitting-machines, Marcel Breuer s Wassily chair and Ron Arad s avant-garde armchairs.
