Biography
Born in La Spezia in 1954, Stefano Giovannoni studied architecture at Florence University under Buti. In the early 1980s, he co-founded the King-Kong Production Group with Guido Venturini. Known for his expressive, accessible design language, Giovannoni was dubbed a “Super & Popular” designer in the 1990s.
He blends technical precision with a unique ability to tap into cultural sentiment, resulting in designs that are intuitive, playful, and commercially successful.
Alessi Designs
Giovannoni began his Alessi collaboration with the iconic Girotondo series (1989) and helped launch the transparent plastic objects of the Family Follows Fiction series (1993). His prolific work appears in the Officina Alessi, Alessi, and A di Alessi catalogs.
Design Style & Legacy
His work often walks the line between design and art, balancing simplicity with clever functionality. He is the mind behind groundbreaking pieces like the Bombo Stool, Paso Doble, Chair First, and Table First for Magis. Chair First was the first 3D plastic chair created through gas-injection molding, while the Bombo Stool pioneered a new typology and even appeared in “Star Trek.”
His designs are featured in museums around the world, solidifying his impact on modern design.
