Mini-sized desktop/shelf edition (1:6 architectural scale model) of the Eames's original DCW wood chair. Vitra Miniature DCW Chair by Charles and Ray Eames. This miniature reproduction has a height of only 4.75 inches. This miniature reproduction of the original full-size chair is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand! In 1940, Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen developed a chair with a novel plywood seat molded into a three-dimensional form for a competition sponsored by the New York Museum of Modern Art. However, it was not possible to produce the chair commercially, due to inadequate technical methods. It was seldom possible to press the plywood into a three-dimensional form without it breaking or splitting. During the following years, Charles and Ray Eames concentrated their efforts on developing a new method. The plywood chairs DCW (Dining Chair Wood) and LCW (Lounge Chair Wood) are the result of this long-term experimentation. In 1945, Charles and Ray Eames returned to the idea of a seating shell made out of molded plywood; however the results were unsatisfying. They dispensed with the multifunctional shell and divided the seat and back into separate, freely articulated elements connected by a spine (frame). Each element has a clearly defined function, which it fulfills optimally with a minimum amount of material. »Shock mounts« – rubber disks bonded onto the wooden surface – connect the seat and back with the frame, which exists in wood or metal and in two different heights, either as a dining chair or lounge chair. This miniature DWC Chair by Eames is part of the Vitra Miniatures Collection made by the Vitra Design Museum and is available from Stardust with Free Shipping and a Low Price Guarantee.
Vitra Miniature DCW Chair by Charles and Ray Eames. The Eames Dining Chair Wood (DCW) (also known as Eames Plywood Dining Chair) is an iconic mid century modern chair designed by husband and wife team Charles and Ray Eames. This Vitra miniature chair ships in a small wooden Vitra box which is perfect for storage or display. This Vitra collectible miniature design chair is constructed to the exact specifications of the original but at a much smaller scale of 1:6. The construction, materials and colors correspond to the historical Vitra Design Museum collection original, right down to the last detail. Because each miniature modern chair is so true to the original, the miniature chair is not only a valuable collector’s item, but also an ideal illustrative material for universities, colleges of design and architects. The Vitra miniatures collection present the most important classics of modern furniture history in miniature scale. The miniature collection is unique worldwide.
The Vitra Design Museum collection includes a fascinating collection of over 224 miniature modern chairs which are all icons of modern furniture. As a kind of summary of the history of industrial furniture design – moving from historicism and art nouveau to the new objectivity of Bauhaus and radical design, and from postmodernism all the way up until the present day – the Vitra Miniature Chair collection has grown to include more than 100 pieces. The chairs are all one sixth of the size of the historical originals. They are all true to scale and replicate the originals right down to the smallest details in construction, material and colour. Thus, not only have the design’s key points been translated in the miniature versions, but details such as materials, the natural grain of the wood, the reproduction of screws and elaborate handicraft involved have also been taken into consideration. All of this has made the pieces in the Miniatures Collection into popular collector’s items. At the same time they provide people who are interested in culture and design with insights into the history of the environments that we create.
