The Flos Model 2097/30 chandelier is a mid-century modern take on the traditional chandelier. Designed in 1958, Model 2097/30 features thirty candelabra lights, each supported by a straight arm extending from the central steel column. The curve of each light's cable mimics the curves of a traditional chandelier. Most of Gino Sarfatti's designs have the purist beauty of thoughtfully made tools, perhaps not surprising since he had an aeronaval engineering degree. His utilitarianism was reflected in his decision to identify each lamp by a numerical code, rather than a name. The Flos Model 2097 chandelier is one such example. Gino Sarfatti (1912-1984) is one of the most important Italian lighting designers of the twentieth century. He is considered to be the godfather of Italy's post-war design renaissance together with other luminaries such as Gio Ponti. He designed his first lamp at the age of 26 after which he established Arteluce; one of the greatest Italian lighting manufacturers of the 20th century. His beautiful light fixtures have an attractive minimalist aesthetic, simple yet essential. Gino Sarfatti was obsessed with light and the elegant simplicity of the light bulb. He always believed that the most important element of a lamp is the shape of the bulb itself. In Chandelier Model 2097, a light fixture worthy of an Alexander Calder mobile, 30 light bulbs form the center of attraction, each supported by a straight steel or brass arm extending from the central steel column. The curve of each light's cable mimics the curves of a traditional chandelier. Gino Sarfatti designed and produced over 700 different lamps and carried out non-stop research into innovation as regards typology, materials, production technologies, light sources, technical lighting effects and design aspects. He won numerous prizes and awards including the Compasso d'Oro and the Honorary Diploma of the Milan Triennale.
