Designed by Hans Bolling in 1954, his little Mermaid is an elaborately designed object with a flair for refined simplicity. Mermaid by Hans Bolling is part of the legendary "wooden creatures" collection, which made the architect/designer world-famous. Often when people think of Denmark, their mind automatically wonders to the most iconic symbol of Copenhagen, the Little Mermaid. Hans Bolling's reinterpretation of the fairytale figure presents a streamlined, minimalist approach to this cultural icon.

Based on the world-famous fairy tale by H.C. Andersen and Copenhagen's "The Little Mermaid" by Edvard Eriksen, the Mermaid by Hans Bolling captures the essence of Denmark with the trademark simple and clean finish. Designed in 1954, the Mermaid went through a thorough editing process, which left the final design with the characteristic small details. It fits with ArchitectMade's passion for creative flair, simplicity, refinement of form, Danish tradition and longevity. The highly specified and elaborate details of the Mermaid's body add a sophisticated dimension to her form. Every angle, curve and bend has been craftily thought out over the span of a couple of years to convey a highly stylized, yet harmonious aesthetic object. Hans Bolling's Mermaid is an elaborately designed wooden figurine with a flair for refined simplicity, which makes you look twice. Mermaid - designed by Hans Bolling - is a Danish classic wooden design object, a perfect gift for design lovers! Presented in gift box. Made in Denmark.

Architectmade Mermaid by Hans Bolling. Part woman, part fish her features demonstrate that Hans Bolling’s Mermaid is much more than a souvenir or a mere character from a fairy tale. Having taken the feminine form beyond the expected, Bolling provided the Mermaid with serenity and wholesomeness. Her character is relevant in today’s time as it brings with it a much needed harmony and balance. The Mermaids hair and tail are of solid oak, the body of maple. Her head, fin, arms and waist can be rotated to change her expression.

During the course of his lifetime, Danish architect/designer Hans Bolling (Hans Bølling) enjoyed the connection between design and fun like many of his contemporaries including Kay Bojesen. Born in 1931 in a small town of Braband in Denmark, Hans Bolling attended an Art- and Handcraft School originally to become an advertising designer, however some years later he followed his passion for architecture and graduated as an architect from the Royal Danish Art Academy. He designed a plethora of art works, ranging from wooden dolls and furniture to villas, living complexes and town halls. Oscar the Dog and his Duck came to life in the 1950s during Hans Bolling's younger years, following the architect's interest in nature and animals. Here he decided to create small figures of animal figurines for his loved ones. Later, after winning an award he received a carpentry machine, which afforded him the opportunity to carve his beloved figures into wood. It is at this point during the Danish spring that the Mermaid, Dog and the Duck, and later its offspring - the Duckling, were born.
