Sori Yanagi Butterfly Stool by Vitra
Designer: Sori Yanagi
Manufacturer: Vitra
The Butterfly Stool was designed by Japanese designer Sori Yanagi.
The Butterfly Stool is an elegant piece of furniture that will compliment a
variety of environments. Although the Yanagi Butterfly Stool was first created in 1954, it has lots of modern charm.
Its sinuous lines evoke butterfly wings, yet at a certain angle,
it is as if a whale is diving back into the ocean.
To design the Butterfly Stool, Sori Yanagi combined his Eastern influences with a special technique created by Ray
and Charles Eames of bending and shaping plywood. Yanagi simply inverted two L-shaped pieces of rosewood
plywood and braced them together using brass hardware. The concept is effortless, yet its presentation is
rather bold. Each Butterfly Stool has its own unique intricate wood pattern as it was intended by nature.
Sori Yanagi studied art in Tokyo. Upon graduation, Sori worked in the office of Charlotte Perriand, a successful
French architect and designer. Sori Yanagi clearly cherished the Japanese aesthetic, but was also very influenced
by his Western peers. His ability to combine cultural influences into modern furniture has made his work highly impressive.
