The B-Line Colombo Modern Multi Chair by Joe Colombo
is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and
the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
The Multichair is a transformable system composed
of two cushions filled with polyurethane foam and covered
in elastic woolen fabric. The two elements may be used
individually or, by combining them in different positions,
to make chairs, armchairs or easy chairs.
Cesare (known as Joe) Colombo was born in Milan in 1930.
Essentially self-taught, he attended the Academy in Brera
and the faculty of Architecture at the
Politecnico di Milano for a few years.
Joe Colombo was extremely prolific and could handle just about anything, like a Leonardo da Vince of the 1960's.
Before becoming a designer he worked as a painter, builder, car salesman and
entrepreneur in the electrics field. The technological utopia of Joe Colombo's
design encompasses many of the hopes of the 1960's in Italy and Europe
without being imprisoned by ideological restraints.
Joe Colombo passed away at the very young age of 41 but never the less
left an impressive and extremely
wide oeuvre include the Coupe lamp, the Acrilica lamp, the Boby Storage Trolley, the Multichair,
the Elda chair and the Joe Colombo Visiona expo.
In 1969 when he was just 39 years old, he already had three of his objects in the permanent collection at the MoMA.
Joe Colombo, just like Verner Panton during the same period, typifies the best of Space Age modern design of the late 1960's.
